Male vs Female?

lola44 Apr 23, 2004 07:15 AM

First off, I'm soooo sorry,, you guys are going to be sooo sick of me asking questions but these are ones that I haven't really found answers to in the various care sheets I've read. So, the more reading I do the more confused I get on what species I like. First it was veiled, then veiled or panthers, now its veiled, panthers or jacksons. Like I've said before, I know I can handle the enclosure size, lighting, heating, feeding, humidity etc, it's more the personality that I think I need help with. (not that I'm blowing off ANY info that I'm gathering about their care and keep! --you should see the scads of paper I've printed out) But now my question is Male or Female? Colour display is not a factor for me but I have been reading about egg binding and was wondering if this is really a problem or does it only happen rarely? Would you recommend male or female and for what reasons. Thanks,,,, again. L.

Definitely a male...hands down. That way you avoid any reproductive problems, you don't have to worry about limiting food intake to try to avoid them laying an infertile clutch...and not to mention, with the three species that you are considering, the males are more colorful (and with Jax, they have cool horns...hehe).

I'm considering only having boys at my house...they are much easier. hehe (not really considering this...just a joke)

I say go with a male for your first Chameleon.

If you want an animal to handle frequently, don't get a Cham. Although some tolerate handling, it only causes stress on them, and stress causes a myriad of problems.

Veileds: PROS: cheap, very hardy, colorful, easy
CONS: can be mean as hell

Panthers: PROS: very hardy, extremely colorful, not quite as aggressive, easy
CONS: expensive

Jackson's: PROS: mellow, relatively cheap (not as cheap as Veileds)
CONS: not near as colorful, not quite as hardy or easy

Hey thanks,,, i like the PROS/CONS breakdown

I agree 100% with trinacliff. The males are lots more colorful, and jackson males do have really cool looking horns that females don't have. And no worries about eggs.(Jacksons give live birth)
I am glad to hear that you've been doing research. You'd be surprised at how many people just buy on impulse with no knowledge at all on their reptile.
And too many questions? Certainly not. That's what these forums are for.
