Clip Nails???

pookie0612 Apr 23, 2004 09:12 AM

I have a 9 month old female veiled chameleon. She seems to be having a problem with her nails, they are too long. She occasionally scratches herself or gets her nails hung in her sides as she is climbing up plants. She has a scheflera, pothos and several different size vines to climb on. I thought all of these different surfaces would keep her nails worn down, but it doesn't appear so. Should I cut her nails? Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Clipping her nails really won't make them much shorter, as only the tiny little tip of the tips are removed. However, if you choose to do so, they will be less prickly and won't hang up on her as much.

One more thing that I may add- clipping her nails will make it harder for her to cling on to branches. I currently have 10.17 breeder veileds & I don't clip any nails. I personally would advise against clipping, but others may disagree.

No way, don't clip the nails. They are the way they are for a reason. You could do serious damage or inflict serious pain, and cause infection if you do this.

Thank you all so much for the advice. I was just concerned for my little girl. Thanks again!

You are very welcome. Hope you decided not to clip. They don't have a nail salon in their natural habitat. HaHa
Good luck with your girl.
