You don't have a neighbor or anything? Or a neighbor's kid who'd be willing to touch the bugs?

I'd volunteer, but I live in San Antonio.. Good luck!

If you put twice as much as useal crickets in the tank, and worms you should be good food wise for the 8 days. But water is another story... Before you go id get a large shallow bowl put it in the tank and see how long it takes to dry up.. OF COURSE finding someone to check in on them would be best... Good luck. Il pay shipping if you want to mail them to me, il watch them for you

Shipping them back and forth in the matter of a little more than a week would be more stressful than just leaving them for 8 days. They should be fine. Leave them will a bowl of mealies, or give them some crickets and a full bowl of water. If your geckos are healthy, they will be fine for 8 days, even if they run out of water.

Your still not reading all of it. You forgot the smiley face !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I wasnt addressing you in the first place so why do you want to be such a pest?

Josh06 Apr 23, 2004 01:46 PM

Pest?? Are you kidding me? Dont be upset because I called you out on your dumb idea. A lot of people put smiley faces at the end of their post. I have no idea why you are getting so defensive, you seem like a very confrontational person...

It was a simple debate. Calling us ignorant is just a weak attempt to throw alcohol on a already extiguished fired.. Better luck next time.

I'm lucky in that my youngest brother is willing to help out if i should decide to go on a vacation (which i'm planning on doing later this year).

What i wanted to tell you about is that i bought these really cool water bottle bowls. Its a bottle that screws into a base, so you just fill the bottle, screw it in place then flip it over and vola, water for 2 weeks LOL. Granted i have to change it every few days cause my geckos insist upon walking through the water usually dragging something into it (mostly mealworms and yes i've watched this happen.....saved the worm in time before it drown LOL). But if ever i was in your situation i'm sure the water problem would be solved.

Now as for food.....i have 14 leopard geckos that lets say eat 15 mealworms/day and thats being conservative....so 225 mealworms/week. I could put out enough food for the leos but when it comes to my crested geckos i'd have a problem.....as i feed on an alternating schedule of CGD, fruit baby food and mealworms. The CGD and baby food will dry out in the first day.

You've honestly got me thinking now hehehe.....i'm really going to have to think about how i can go away once i'm out on my own and if my brother isn't available.

Well hopefully the water bottle thing helps ya out. The bottles are huge and hold alot.

Thanx that takes care of the water problem, and as for feeding i think ill just put a bunch of mealworms into a bowl for them the day i leave and that should last em.

wow that was a great idea with the water...ive seen those but never really thought they were worth the money...however i'm pretty sure that a week without feeding but just with a big disha mealworms would be fine...otherwise....you could try this...and my friends have done it....not that i think its GREAT idea...but it will ensure that your geckos won't lose weight....

let their digestive tracts clear...and hibernate them...drop the temps...and put them in a cabinet...where there is little to no light...or a big black towel/cloth over the tank....usually works well...my friend left for 2 weeks at a time for business trips..and seems to work...still leave in a dish of mealies just incase they are still hungry...

or u could invent a self mealworm dispenser like the water bottle method instead put mealworms....HAHHAHA....once they're all eaten...more will fall out...im just joking....i think hibernation for your case would be better...because they usually do absolute nothing...so dramatically decreased metabolism...and once you warm them up again..they eat like machines....and they breed like rabbits...but whatever you pick...i wish you the best of luck!!!

In my opinion water is the key. I like RedQuakes idea as this sounds like it will keep water for 8 days. I would only leave mealworms and maybe a small bowl of waxies in another location. I would NOT put a bunch of crickets in as the uneaten ones will just stress out the geckos. Figure your feeder insects need to eat too so the crickets will just start eating gecko poo, and then your gecko will be eating crickets filled with poo by the end of the week. Yuck.
You may want to throw a baby carrot in with the mealworms so they have something to eat as well.
Best of luck and I am sure they will be ok.

Ive tried the carrot thing before and my gecko at it and died so im thinking no.

Really, wow. How big was the carrot?? You would think if a gecko ate a piece of carrot it wouldn't cause a problem what so ever. Interesting. Tell me more about this because I never heard of such a thing.
Thanks
Joyce

pocketfulloffire Apr 23, 2004 04:59 PM

It was a normal size baby carrot but the gecko was very small so when he/she ate it he/she choked to death.

Ya, water is more important then food, but instead of going out to buy a funky contraption, see what you have in your pantree. I think an empty cream cheese container would work well, or something similar. But those little doggy automatic water-ers could work too, my fear is that it might tip over though.

Call a friend see if they are willing to just look at the geckos each day.

Good luck

LeopardGeckoMan Apr 23, 2004 09:16 PM

I dont think just putting in alot of water will work. What if you gecko goes to the bathroom in the water dish? Do you expect them to drink their disolved poop? Id put in mealworms but not crickets because they will try to eat your gecko and they will just bite and stress them out. So the best answer i think would be asking a friend or relative to come by and check on them daily.

Resevoir water bowls should help. I use them... you just have to make sure the crickets don't crawl into the resevoir(what a dump bug).

I think that, like many have said before, a bowl of mealies and a bunch of crickets should do fine for food.

Good luck.
