Panacur and gravid females...

veronicag Apr 23, 2004 10:14 AM

Does anyone know if you can give Panacur (for treating pinworms) to a gravid female? She laid a clutch about a month ago and is showing signs of being egg bound again. This beardie doesn't belong to me, she's a friends beardie (for those of you that know I don't breed). I don't want to harm the eggs or risk hurting her. If anyone has any info on this it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Veronica

The best advise I can give you is to call your vet and ask. I can tell you that I've given Fenbendazole and Flagyl to some of my gravid veiled chameleons with no ill effects. But never had to dose any beardies when they were gravid, so I really don't know. I can say to keep your reptile very well hydrated after dosing because some dewormers cause kidney problems and the extra water keeps them flushed.
Can you contact your friend & explain the situation? I'd rather lose a clutch, than have a beardie with health issues lay eggs. Personally, I put the health of my reptiles first. I can always get another clutch of eggs later when her health has improved.
I'm not a vet, so I'd strongly recommend a phone call or visit to his office. There could possibly be something else wrong with her that Panacur won't help. Better to be safe, than sorry.
Just my opinion,

Hi
i give parazap instead of panacure.
here the worms got resitent against panacure and on one time it not workt for me.
i start the give parazap.com and after 7 days tea 7 days no tea and then 7 days tea again i whas worm free.
parazap wil kill the worm eggs to and expell them
panacure you much give again til you have the eggs that come out after 10 days and one lost egg can start all every thing over and over again.
i also gave it to gravid females and to babie beardie and they reacting very well on it !!

Parasites only become resistant to the Panacur if it is administered incorrectly. If you would weigh your reptile & give the proper dosages as needed, the parasites would be eradicated. You must have guessed at the amount to be given. This is a definite No-No. Would you give a small child an unmeasured amount of prescription medication?
Also, Panacur is not really that effective on all types of internal problems, such as Coccidia and tapeworms. You need Albon and Droncit for those.

My female was gravid and she looks a little slump-ish and i thought she could have been egg bound. My stepfather suggested giving it some Panacur that he uses for his geckos. We gave it a try and from what I saw she was doing much better in the days after i gave it to her. My brother put it in liquid and put it on her mouth and she licked it off. Then, She blessed me with 35 eggs that are looking all pretty good right now except maybe 1 that looks a bit yellow. So in my case it made it better not worse.

Joey

I only gave Panacur because my ParaZap was on its way. I just read the other posts and im getting the image thats its a 50/50 chance she will get better? Well id say Use parazap if you have it but if you have an emergency use Panacure because it'd be better then nothing. Yeah, It is important to make sure you give it the appropriate amount. I think on the label it says like how much to administer (sp?)

Thankz
Joey
