Snake Reproduction?

seth Apr 23, 2004 10:32 AM

I have a two year old snow corn thats around 38-40 inches and i was wondering if when sexually mature do corns produce egg follicles(sp)inside themselves and reabsorb them into their system when they haven't be breed or do they only produce them after they have been mated?

thanks
Seth

Definately the former. I've had both corn snakes and gray banded kingsnakes swollen and 'visually' laiden with "eggs" that had not been in contact with a male. These animals always bred immediately when placed with a breeding male.

They will produce infertile eggs and lay them anyway, just because they can LOL. They are breeding machines and want to reproduce. If you bred the female the year before and tried to hold the male off this year, the female may have retained enough sperm from the previous year to produce some fertile eggs, I had 3 fertile eggs hatch from a female who laid a clutch of 18 eggs and had not been in a cage with another snake in 14 months! The only snake I know of that is more prolific then the Corn Snake is the African House snake, they will produce clutches of eggs year round in 60 day intervals provided there is enough food supply to support the activity.
Good Luck
