taming savannah monitor

Today I got a 2 to 3 feet savannah monitor from a friend who is moving. Is there anyway I can tame him enough to hold or put on a lizard leash. He wasn't held much or anything. He has been living in a large wood/screen box and he is a little aggressive.
Any ideas on taming him?
