oh my gosh!!! I cannot believe it!

My fat tail, for the first time in three months, ate last night!!!! He had six crickets!
I stopped by the reptile center yesterday to pick up some food for him... he always has had food available to him, mealworrms in a dish, but I had run out. I was going to wait for the night, but I saw him peeking out of his hide so i decided to go for it.
He gobbled up six crickets. I had tried crickets in the past three months, but he always seemed bothered by them and disinterested.
We have been to the vet and he is eating out of a syringe, but hopefully this is no longer.
Does anyone have an idea of what may have had to do with his change of heart?

You know, that is a really nice thing to hear. It has been a long long road of worrying, money spent, more worrying, and taking care of him in a way that just isnt natural..... feeding from a syringe??? how stressful, how annoying, how out of the ordinary! Needless to say im glad that it all paid off. I am going to get more crickets today, I just hope that he continues to eat and doesnt start regressing again. It is just one day that ive gotten him to eat, but this is really a big step.

It could be the change in season. Unfortunately, unless you get a hatchling, most pet store fat tails are WC. He was probably just trying to hibernate. The temps and lighting is changing lately and he probably picked that up...comming out of hibernation. (He could have been active, but not as active as when they are not hibernating.) They usually go into a brumation in our winter because in africa it is the dry season and they just live on their tail reserves for that time.

It is interesting that you suggest hibernation. I have heard that they have a tendency to slow down during the winter, but the longest that i had heard about their behavior being like this was a few weeks.... he had been acting strangely for three months!
Also, I am not so sure that he was wild caught. I bought him at six months old from a reptile show. He has his full tail, was in great health when I got him, and thrived under my care for the following seven months. It was just really strange.
I mean, he did just slow down, hide out under the paper towels, not eat, etc. He lost weight in both his tail and his body. It was a worrisome time, but maybe now it is over.
