Clicking sound and potty problem...

princesslisa88 Apr 23, 2004 01:42 PM

Hi,
Does the clicking sound that you hear when your tort is breathing mean a URI? He is def. eatting well, not too active... Usually goes to his cave after he eats... Roams around at night long after I turn the lights off... My other question is that I see him eating and he has a healthy appetite but I haven't been able to get him to go potty in about 5 days... I don't know where it's going because it's def. not coming out!! I have been soaking him every day in warm water. I leave him in for about 10-20 mins (making sure the water remains warm and changing it if it gets cool).

Any thoughts?? Should I take him back to the vet?

Thanks!

My baby Herman tort had the same problem and he ended up with respitory problems. I would consider taking yours to the vet to get checked. They will probably want to take xrays to see if anything is going on in his lungs. That sound is how I knew mine was sick. He was still eating..not as much but still pretty good...and was still active at first...but later he started wanting to bask more. He also didn't seem to want to go to bed at night. I would have to pick him up and put him in his hide because he would just stay under his heat source long after I turned it off. Not sure about the potty problem. I know they shouldn't have too much fruit but maybe you could give him a little to soften his stools...it might help him get it out if it is softer? I really have no clue, just an idea. Good luck! I hope the little guy is okay.

Thanks Becki. I am going to call in the morning and make an appt. with another vet that I've found that deals with tortoises. Thanks a lot! I gave him red pepper today so hopefully that will loosen things up... We shall see...

Good luck with the little one! It is so scary when they are sick. Mine is doing much better so far. (keeping fingers crossed). You might want to up your heat a little. My vet said to keep it in the middle to high eighties. It gives them a fever and helps them fight off infection. Some torts don't even need medicine when they do this. I am trying to do this with my new tort since she is now making the clicking sound like Sam was. I'm hoping it helps so she won't need to get medicine. Good luck!!! Keep us posted!

I think it would be a good idea to take him back to the vet. It's possible the RI was never really cured, but just repressed--as I recall, you were worried about it coming back a couple weeks ago? Is there any nasal discharge? It'd probably be worthwhile for the vet to do a nasal smear and see if a specific bacteria can be cultured. You might need to try another antibiotic (can't remember what you used before).

He has no nasal discharge at all. The bubbles are all gone but all of a sudden the clicking has become a constant thing almost... He's eating and moving around and such but he clicks... You can't hear it until you hold him and even then it's really faint. I used Baytril injections before. The vet wasn't really any good tho. Only gave him 3 injections.

Hi Lisa!

How is your little guy doing? Did you take him to the vets? Just wondering how he was. Hopefully doing better and not worse! Keep us posted.
