Breeding?

purduekitten Apr 23, 2004 02:39 PM

I have 2 Painteds that I have had since Jan 2003. I am not sure of their ages but the male is about 5" and the female is 7" They are currently in a 29 gallon aquarium (filled to about 3" from top for maxium swimming area) with UV lighting and basking area 12 hours/day. They have begun to show mating behavior and I am curious as to what I can/should do for them to encourage them and help them be successful.

Well you didn't mention if you brumated them, or where you lived. But they may be breeding. If so, you'll need to have a land area big enough for the female to lay eggs in, which means you'll most likely need to switch her tanks after breeding season or lower the water alot.

Get maybe a 40 gallon tank, on one end, put 1 or 2 rubbermaid containers big enough for the female to fit in, one with sand and one with dirt so she can choose where to lay the eggs.
