Collecting eggs in an enclosure with potted plants.

Remedy Apr 23, 2004 11:30 PM

i recently got a female for my male crested. i have two 6 inch potted plants in my crested enclosure (and a paper towel substrate). i plan to put a nest box in this weekend. what are the chances that she will lay her eggs in the nest box?? do i even need a nest box if she will lay her egss in the plants??

Considering you're going to need to check for eggs on a daily (or at least every other day) basis, I think I would remove the plants. If you've got two plants and one egg container, you've got a 1-in-3 chance that she'll use the egg box. In fact, if given a choice, she'll probably choose to lay the eggs against the roots of the plants.

The other thing that yo uwill want to consider is that your house plants most likely have low lying leaves, which she may use as cover to lay her eggs. This means that you would need to be extra dilligent when looking for eggs because they will be much more hidden.

Just another thought.

Not to be in contrediction with others, but just to give you another point of view
( maybey I'm just lucky with the way it goes in my enclosure )

The ground is covered with a fine layer of eco-earth and there's two big plants in the enclosure. It's been her third cluth this year and she always did choose the nest box ( eco-earth and peat moss ). She usually starts ''diging'' one or two days before she will lay her eggs ...

The only answer I have, it's probably easier to lay her eggs in the nest box than in the plants ( you also have to consider if the soil of the plant is near dry or moist, cause she will choose the best site to lay ... )

im new to cresteds but it might work if u put some large rocks(unable to be ingested) over the soil in the plants so that she has no choice but the nest box
