Looking for something Leucistic....

Tigergenesis Apr 24, 2004 06:36 AM

do I have any other options other than a Leucistic Texas Rat or Leucistic Southern Pine? I know there are ball pythons, but I want something in a lower price range. I can't decide between the Texas Rat or Pine (although I suspect it will be easier to get the rat), but I thought I'd see what other options I have.

Thanks.

I have both. Obviously the rat is the cheaper by a big margin. The pine is very nice though too. As to anything else...Good luck. I think there might be some garters and Hognoses out there but aside from Rats and pines leucistics are rare and high priced. I did catch a leucistic Dekay's Brown many years ago (it died with out being bred by the man I sold it to).

Since you have both, what are they like as far as tempermant and feeding response (I prefer to feed FT).

Thanks.

Where (roughly) did you find the Dekay's?

I am such a fan of the North American Ratsnakes, that I really can't think of a better choice than a Texas Rat. I know that they now seem "common"...but you are going to get a great snake at a great price. I love mine. Don't worry about all the talk about them being too feisty, either. A little work with these beauties goes a long way. When mine was a baby, it used to strike at me often. Now I pick it up without ever expecting to get bit. Most will calm down very nicely with regular handling.
I used a latex glove to "teach" mine that biting doesn't taste very good. It seemed to work. Duffy

How dose the latex glove thing work?

If the snake is a biter, you can wear the kind of latex gloves that come in cheap disposable boxes (like you wear in janitorial or health-care fields). It actually can do two things...When the snake bites, supposedly they don't much care for the "taste" of the latex, and it is a negative consequence to biting. Also, if you tend to "hesitate" when picking up a biter, the gloves can give you a little more confidence. This will allow you to do more frequent handling (important for calming down the feisty young snake) and also give you the quick, confident grab that is less likely to induce a strike.
Since many snakes (including my little leucistic when I first got him) often just strike when first picked up, I just used one glove...on the hand I used to pick the snake up with. I would pick him up, let him bite the glove and then calm down, then transfer him to my ungloved hand. I would then take the glove off of my other hand (using my mouth or foot sometimes!!!) and proceed to handle the snake. This worked great for me, and now my little leucy never bites. They usually calm down anyway, but I think that this helped us both through the process. Duffy

The dekay was caught in Margate (Broward Co. Fla) at what is now Turtle Run, a developement on the northwest corner of 441 and Sample Road back in 1980.

Of the two the Texas tends to have the better nature. Bulls and Pines are a bit noisy...They can get rather loud with the hissing and a touch defensive till they are picked up.

Latex Gloves? That is for wimps. Only a large rat or pine has a bite worth paying attention too. If it isn't tame by then well....
