Possible to Overfeed ?

herperboy Apr 24, 2004 08:12 AM

Is it possible to overfeed your boa? She was bitten by a mouse and didnt eat for 4 months, so she is really skinny. Shes a year old and only about 2 1/2 feet long. In 9 days she has eaten 8 mice. Is that too much?

That seems like a lot! I am always tempted to feed my BCi because he has such a strong feeding response and I am used to my BPs' sluggish feeding response. But I'd only feed him once a week; powerfeeding is not a good thing, and can lead to overfat, small-headed boas. I feed mine two rat pups a week, one after the other (not forcefed one after the other, but I let him take both seperately.) You should switch to rat pups; and I would not feed live anymore, because of the risk of another bite to your snake, which could result in fear-of-feeding again.

I am not feeding live. And I am only feeding her that much to put on some much needed weight. I really wanted to know if there were any short term health risks from feeding alot for a few weeks.

I beleive that that's too much feeding. She needs to be given time to digest, plus it puts a stress on her internal organs. I'd go back to once a week feeding, just maybe a little larger than before, or two smaller meals. No need to make up 4 months of dieting in 2 weeks time, before you know it, she'll be nice and stout. Now's a good time to start pre-killing your items, and use tongs.
