looking for 26

Nathan619 Jun 15, 2003 02:39 AM

Hey guys, I just got photos of my 25th herp in So Cal (Phyrnosoma coronatum)FINALLY and I am going for 26. And well this may be a bit of a stupid question, but I've gotta ask. Does anyone know where I can go to get some pics of sea turtles in the wild? I don't count zoo or collection photos. I am not much on sea life as I am from the midwest and am completely a land lubber. Thanks in advance and thanks for not sending moronic responses like "the ocean"

Sea turtles are easy to see in the wild in Hawaii, but if your looking for one in California, good luck, cause you'll need a lot of that

If you are in California the best thing to do is head south! I have seen sea turtles in Bajia de Los Angeles, Isla Cedros, Mulege, La Paz, etc. however you'll most likely need to either tow a boat or hire a Panga, the local fishermen in Baja would give you your best bet on finding a Tortuga, they tend to hang out around floatsum and the like as there is food there and the fishermen usually know where to find them, depends on how much time and budget you have to be honest. Ocassionally and I mean like once every 10th blue moon you may be able to spot one on the beach in extreme southern california e.g. Silver Strand state beach on Coronado Island but you may have a better chance of winning the lottery. Also, very occasionally there are some spotted at the Coronado Islands (Mexico) but it's usally only in warm water (El Nino) years. Hope this helps, good luck!

Stebbins (1985) Field Guide mentions that Green Turtles can sometimes be seen in the San Diego Bay near the electric power plant outlet. For more info, see Field Guide
