Tokay gecko with _______

antonm Jun 15, 2003 02:40 AM

Do tokay geckos do ok with ANY other types of geckos? At our store we kept him in with 2 carrot tails, 1 velvet, and a monarch before I bought him (this was all in a 5 gallon). They never seemed to have any problems but then again thats not much territory to fight over. Anyone have any input on this?

Hello Antonm:
Tokay Geckos can be quite aggressive and because of their size they should not have any tankmates besides other Tokays of similar size. I wouldn't even keep a tokay (or a pair) in anything less than a twenty gallon tank.
While not the most aggressive of geckos toward their tankmates they will certainly out compete any smaller animals for food. Tokays should only be kept with their own kind.
I hope this info helps. Good Luck!!!

be in the same tank as any other species.

I have a friend who had kept a tokay, golden, skunk, wallberg, and flying gecko, all in the same tank. a 65 gallon tank. he said it was problem free for him. I have a 2ft x 2ft x 3ft high screen tank coming in the mail, and will be putting together a skunk and a tokay. but my tokay, so far, is really tame, and is letting me pet him after only 3 days. ill let you know how things turn out.

Ok, I keep and breed tokays since a number of years (> 20 with a gap in between).
To my experience they are among the least agressive lizards with respect to inter as well as intraspecific agressivity.
But they need space. Otherwise they feel insecure and might appear agressive (only if spce is THAT limited that they might not even "think about" a territory...so in extremely tiny or overcrowded enclosures they appear "friendly" again)
A Tokay individual, group or pir, inhabiting a tank of 100g or bigger (per pair) will be very friendly against lizards which are too big to be eaten.
They might fight their closest relatives (G. smithii, G. siamensis, G. vittatus) but norally get along well with others. Even ohter members of the genus Gekko, like the less closely related monarchus (but these can be agressive towards the tokays).
As a rule of thumb, each cagemate should have at least 3/4 the mass of the biggest tokay in the tank.
That restricts the availablity of other geckonids.
But all my breeding groups of tokays share their tanks with cagemates and that works very well for me.....even over a long time.
