Hey, I was just talking to my Bio Teacher about this the other day.
Wait for a realy rainy day. Since most newts are in the class or (Mole) newts, they will come out of the ground and hide under the leaves in the woods and under rocks. The best place to look is around a stream during are just after it rains.

On a good day you could catch up to 20 nice and slimey monsters under the rocks looking for bugs.

Hope this helps, over here in South Carolina, he have a lot and its going to rain tomarrow.

Another great place to look is under died trees on the ground. More bugs under there means mroe Salamanders. You have to wait till the first warm rain of spring, should be any day now.

Heres a nice site that will tell you a little more

Well, a pipe underneath the mobile home where my mom lives sprunk a leak last summer and we didn't know it for probably a month.
When we crawled underneath to fix it, there were about three dozen tiger sals just luxuriating in their own private spa.
Granted, this is a pretty expensive way of getting salamanders but if you are truely desperate...
