Hatchling help asap!

Melle Apr 24, 2004 10:26 AM

Hey guys,

Looked in the incubator last night and to my surprise, saw a lil baby gecko After it was all done hatching i put him in a conatiner with a heat pad and paper towels.

OK a few things, one, i cant tell if one of its eyes did not develop correctly, or if there is just egg goo from hatching dried on it. any thoughts? sorry i cant get a pic, i no longer have a digital camera i was thinkin of maybe trying to clean him off, but i dont want to stress him out.

second, everywhere i have read says they live off their egg yolk for the first week. well, i dont see an egg yolk should something still be attatched? he wasnt attatched to anything when i took him out of the incubator. if there IS supposed to be an egg yolk atattched still, what should i do?

Third, he really isnt very active. i mean, when he does move its pretty quick, but so far he just kinda sits. i know hes still not even a day old, but i always hear of hatchlings that are fiesty and scream at you right out of the egg. and his back legs seem to move kinda funny. he gets around great, but the back legs seem to not work the way they should.

This is my very first hatchling, and in fact is the only egg that turned out fertile from my gecko who needs surgery to remove her uterus, so this little guy means a whole lot. (maybe after all these problems, think im just gonna stop trying to breed for a while ) any help or suggestions on all this would be appreciated, thanks!

Don't worry they do tend to walk funny the first day, and not all of them hiss and scream.
For the eye hopfully it is just gook, you could try a moist q-tip to see but that might stress him out too much right now, so maybe just moisten his humid hide real well on the sides and he will hopefully rub it off, but if he doesn't you will probably have to try later on. If it is a deformity hopefully it won't cause him any problems, and he will live just fine with it.

Ohh and the yolk is inside of them. They absob it prior to hatching, majority of the time. After thier first shed, usually within a week, they will start to eat.

All hatchlings are different. Some are active some are very calm. We won't be able to help with the eye without a pic, so just watch it and see if it's ok in a few days. It could be goo or it may be something else. Don't try to clean the hatchling, it will clean itself when it is rested. It is perfectly fine if there is no yolk sack. Give it a couple of days of rest and quite then you can try to feed it. They will usally eat within a few days though some will take longer. Make sure it has calicum available and to dust your feeders at every feeding. Make sure to provide a small humid hide also. After their first shed and poo is when I have noticed that they become most active. Once they have have gone to the bathroom it is pretty much smooth sailing. Good luck.
