OT: Our newest 4 legged friend........our GSD pup

Isn't he a cutie! Koda is 5.5 months old and such a lover. He would rather be petted than anything and loves to train. You couldn't ask for a better German shepard. And yes he's full blooded and not a mix. I get that alot with him for some reason, well he doesn't look like Rin Tin Tin I guess....LOL. But then again I have a brussels griffion that everyone thinks is a pug. I don't think anyone but the dog trainer got it right...LOL. Anyway, just had to share!

Looks good to me. Nice pet quality animal. You're probably getting slack since his ears are so round at the tips. Most GS have tall pointed ears. Not a big deal at all. At Pet Nebula we sell a variety of pets including family raised puppies. I see quite a bit of variance within most registered breeds.

His ears aren't rounded. He's teething so they are flipped back. When they do stand up they are pointed. Koda is out of the top working lines from the Czech Rep. They were training him for Sch1 but his temperment held him back, he's just too laid back for the breeder that had him. They want a dog with a higher drive (like Koda on crack) because they compete professionally. Which is great for us, because we found Koda! Sorry I take offence to pet quality with Koda because he is so much more. He is going to be a great dog no matter which area of training we choose to take him to. He's not an american shepard by any means. He has strong nerves and a is a soft dog which is what we wanted. Not like some of the american bred dogs with weak nerves and a hard attitude which is a very bad combination. I work hard with my dogs so they can be all that I know they can be and have fun doing it. Which is why when we were looking for Koda we went above pet quality. Have a great day!

looked like he had rounded ears. They are not supposed to be completely pointed anyway. However, "hanging", ie flopped back, ears are a disqualifing fault. I deal with this a lot, show vs. pet quality pups. The pet quality are not of poor quality, they just don't make the cut when it comes to showing an animal due to a minor defect. In my opinion they(pet quality) make better family members. You are lucky to have such a wonderful GS. No offense meant. Its a boa forum anyway.

"pet-quality" is not a "bad" thing whatsoever. All it means is that the dog is not able to compete in the show-ring or in the case of a German ShepHERD is not able to compete in Schutzhund.

I used to train ShepHERDS (sorry the many wrong spellings of shepherds just get to me, lol) for Schutzhund and have also seen and trained many show quality ones. (german lines, NOT american lines)

Yours is a nice looking pup, but not show-quality, he is of working lines. The ears do look odd, but like you said, he's teething and they flopped back, although I have never seen them flop back in this fashion, usually they flop either side-ways or to the front, and usually its not both ears flopping the exact same way.

If you ever consider taping them, you should do it now, as he is almost to old for it. They might just come up on their own, but since both ears are flopping the exact same way, they might just be weak.

He is a very cute pup, and you should be proud of him. Again, there is nothing wrong with "pet-quality", they can make the best "pets".

A well bred and trained German Shepherd is a joy to own.

I didn't even realize I spelled it wrong...LOL. Just came out that way. I understand about pet quality. But Koda was not bred for show, he was bred as a working dog. Which doesn't change the fact that he's not what the breeder/trainer was looking for. Which the trainer said he could go to Sch1 but that would be about it. But ya never know! I have no interest at this point to start on Sch1. I was thinking more of service training because of his temperment. His ears flip all different ways. It just happened when I was taking pictures they both flipped back. And before he started teething heavily they were both standing. All I know is what I'm told about the ears by my trainer. Her passion is GSDs. I guess I am just senstive about the whole pet quality thing with him, well with both my dogs, because they are so much more than pets...LOL.
