My Vet and I are stumped!

leofreak Apr 24, 2004 02:00 PM

My beardie's legs are pretty bad he cant use them at all,and it started when is tail started necrosis(sp?)and when he had parasites.Well my vet assumed it was Calcium Deffiencey automatically so we started him a liquid calcium and trying to get him to eat high calcium foods such as silk worms and assorted greens. But she just took blood and his calcium level is fine so are his kidneys and everything except muscle enzymes because of the necrosis. So they cut his tail off(poor little beardie!) and that was yesterday. We are hoping the tail was infected and poisoning his body so he wasnt feeling good and didnt wanna use his legs so he will eventually heal. Also his extras came back fine no broken bones or kinked spine.Anyone have another theory beside the tail poisoning him?

Hi
i asume you use uvb/uva lights?
becuase you can give so much calsium if you want but if you not have propper light it not go into his system.
its also could be a vitamin b thing .
some time if they not get enough vitamine b they also can not use the legs very well.
and i know parasite can also suck up calsium so there is nothing left for youre animal to use!!
what kinda of parasite you deealing with ?
worms btw??
they eat up also much calsium .
is he clean now ???

paralysis to the rear legs could be impaction and/or eating a too large food item. Has he gone poo lately and are you keeping him well hydrated as treatments for coccidia can dehydrate a dragon.

He has been pooping for than normal he has pooped like 3 times a day for 3 days then he got blood tests before his tail amputated and pooped then was a day ago. So its not impaction. Maybe he ate too big a prey because he has been pooping alot.Is the paralysis healable?or is it permanent paralysis.

I've heard if you give a baby too large of a prey item, it causes paralisis because the prey item is lodged in its stomach and it is soo full that it buldges into some nerve which controls the legs thus making the dragon paralized. im not sure if it is permanent though. poor little guy. hope he makes it.

He had blood work? Where did the needle enter? BigFil had a beardie that had a shot, it hit a nerve and his beardie was unable to use his leg properly. Any chance of that happening??
