i came into my room today and first went to see my beardie named Plath. I was wicked scared! i looked at him and his eyes were closed and VERY puffed up, loke they popped out of his head i knelt down to see and it was all pink inside and then they popped back in, opened and he was staring at me as usual. what happened there?!

also, i know beardie's need UVB rays. SO i purchased a 25 watt bulb to supply him with UV rays but he has a 100 watt soft white light bulb for heat. is this combonation okay? also, it said on the bulb package to get UVB results i have to use it with a reptile lamp they make, can i just use my Flukers reptile lamp. it said it helped emit more powerful UV rays...

Then it was because he's getting ready to shed. They do it to loosen the skin around their eyes.

It's completely normal and there is no need to worry. Like others said it is done to loosen the old skin around their eyballs. I've seen both of my dragons do it from time to time, but it is kinda scary at first.

I don't think those 25 watt bulbs put out enough UVB. You need to be using a flourescent, reptisun 5.0.

They eye popping is "a beardie thing" he may have had some debree in his eyes or maybe it just feels good to bug em out

well, the reptisun 5.0 require a hood and..well...those are very expensive and so are the bulbs but..if it is what i need then i will do anything for him.

I notice mine doing that when they get close to a shed.

You can go to Home Depot/Lowes and get shop lights.
Or, Walmart has under the cabinet fixtures for like, 10.00/18".

an 18" light bulb need so sort of hood. by shop lights do you mean flourescent? can i just use a halogen bulb from wal mart or are the reptile halogen bulbs different?

Christyj Apr 25, 2004 12:55 PM

Yes, I meant a flourescent fixture.
Point being, you need more UVB and a 5.0 bulb and something to put it in..
