our new collared lizard really scared me the other day....

starmom Jun 15, 2003 06:40 AM

I came home from work and was changing paper towels, watering, generally cleaning and feeding (I have 9 lizards) and Daniel was sitting on his rock under the basking light around 5pm with his eyes closed and then im looking really hard and not seeing any respirations and then im thinking "oh [bleep] hes dead" so I get my misting bottle and mist him and suddenly he opens his eyes and hasnt done that again that ive noticed (I also work and have kids so im not staring at him all day long either) that was weird is that a "collard lizard thing" or just a fluke, that freaked me out.....

also do they like an occasional bath like a bearded or rankin likes?

Thanks
Sue and her daughter Rachael (daniels mommy offically)

I would not know a Collard lizard thing....However, seeing a collared lizard sit motionless, and bulge it's eyeballs out while they are closed is pretty common. I personally believe it is a mechanism to get debris away from the eye ball. I've noticed mine do it at times when sand is on their face.

I see you use papertowels as a substate, so maybe it had a piece of lint in his eye.

Bathing...I'd say no collareds probably could care less. Naturally speaking, when they are around water the most, it is to drink, or because it started raining before they could get under a rock...I don't believe they come out to play in it ;P

The reason I asked about the bathing thing is because I have some bearded dragons and a rankin dragon, and in many ways the collards seem similar, wake/sleep cycle, the eyes and the ridges around the eyes look like bearded dragons, they come from a similar climate I think....(beardies are from australia which has hot desert areas) the way they act, but the collards are much more "energetic" most of the time, the beardies can be at time jumping around scratching the side of the tank....

humans give beardies "bath time" to soak and hydrate, assist with shedding.

I just wanted to know if there were similar needs in that area.

as far as paper towels I have l0 reptiles that have various needs and most have an area at least of paper towels. Ive never seen any of my critters have a problem with lint in its eye.

for new animals I generally do this for hygiene and so I can better observe the droppings to see if they look abnormal.
