Tamatave not laying

jovcham Apr 24, 2004 09:01 PM

How long has you chameleons gone with eggs inside them? I bred my tamatave the 17th of last month and she is still holding on to them. She definatly has eggs, she's gained 28 grams since her breeding.

She still eats like a pig and just hangs out, not wandering around, not testing out the dirt..nothing..I'm getting anxious.

Jovana,
My females first clutches seem to be about 22-24 days after getting their gravid colors, which seems to average a few days after breeding, so you're not in trouble quite yet. Get ready for it though... After their first clutch, everything is kinda up in the air, some females lay another 2 clutches without mating, at some random time in the future, some never lay again. 28 grams is good though, so just sit tight and it'll happen. She'll usually just be sitting on the floor in the morning, sometimes scratching in their ficus trees. After they lay a few times, they get the routine down. They'll sit on the floor and look up at you saying "Ok, put me in the bucket, let's get this over with." Seems like the more clutches they have laid, the easier and faster it gets. I have a few females that could do it blindfolded now. Good luck let me know what happens.

In hopes to relieve you from your stress and anxiety, I've read several sources that state a panther cham can go as long as 40 days before laying.

I can personally attest to this, as i have one Female panther cham who always lay after 40 days. At first i was really worried myself like you, but eventually my cham pulled through. And she has been showing the same laying pattern ever since. The interesting thing is her eggs are bigger compared to my other chams eggs.

that being said, we also can't say that 100% she is one of those "late layers". but be relieved that she isn't 100% egg bound.

I'm feeling a bit better now, I just wish she would hurry and lay so I know everything is ok. the last one that laid only took 21 days. I've raised this one from a month old so she's my little girl, I dont want anything bad to happen to her.

Should I show her what to do...maybe show her a birthing video
