Best time to feed couperi?

thesnakeman Apr 24, 2004 09:33 PM

What is everyones opinion about time of day to feed? When do you seem to get the strongest feeding response? Early morning, morning, mid-day, afternoon, evening? Just food for thought.

Also, where is a good source for chicks {besides the bar... lol}I once knew a fellow who lost his entire collectilon of boids because the chicks were medicated with something, and the snakes could'nt tollerate it. Buy the time he figured out what was going on, it was too late. So I'm naturaly a little leary of chicks!

I've been happy with rodentpro. I don't believe the chicks are fed before they are dispatched, so there should be no medication in them.

Ask you supplier about medication..... I know of a guy that had problems too lost all his baby blood pythons because of medicated chicks.... from what I gather most chicks that go for snake food are byproducts from hatcheries.. for example laying breeds of chickens (white Leghorns) for commercial operations are bred for that sole purpose whereas the male chicks are deem useless & sold REAL cheap.

Same deal with this kid who was locally selling rats VERY cheap for snake food, turned out he was stealing them from the University's lab & they had been treated which resulted in somebody losing an Albino Boa plus a few other high end snakes.. The long & the short of it is...... don't be lookin for deals & check out WHERE the chicks come from before feeding them to your indigos. I'm sure most in here will concur we all invest too much time & money in these guys to risk losing them over cheap food!!!

Just my 2 cents

Sorry, that Smashing Pumkins song "Runaway Train" has been running through my mind all morning. Actually, I DO feed mine at night during the hot summer months. Primarily because I don't have time during the day and I stay up late to do so. My Ex called it "puttering" around the garage or snake room. Thats a kind way of saying that I am scooting around the house like some old man. Hey, it relieves stress...and alot of us
need that relief. Dureing the winter months I tend to clean on weekend and during the day. Nightime is to cold(A bitter 50-60 degrees in San Diego...dont hate us SOFT Californians...we pay up the whazooo for this weather.
And, since I hate dirty cages, I tend to clean them whenever the "pungent" scent of indigo poop hits my nostrils. Which is daily. Or no less than every other day.

Lessons #1> Puttering around house late is good, might as well clean cages. You could be doing a lot worse.

Lesson#2.> Indigo snakes need cleaning all the time. And often when you clean the cage...they just drop another load in it. kind of like raising ungratefull children who, as soon as they get to high school, take you car keys and drive over to Canada to party. Without your permission. lol

I so eloquently displayed my knowledge of current music in my former post, by saying that the song "Runaway Train" was sung by the Smashing Pumpkins. Well....HA!!! I was wrong! No, go ahead and say it, cause I am. THAT song was sung by:

SOUL ASYLUM

I have it on good record from someone who is much younger than I and whos memory hasn't deteriorated quite as much(But just give them time, laddie, just give them time...!)

Ashamedly,

Fred Albury

P.S.

I STILL know where my teeth are :0

Now there's a phrase I haven't heard in 30 years or so.....

By the way, you don't happen to know where my teeth are, do you?

Errr....You wouldnt have happened to have left them in the CRIBO cage by any chance? By now they are probably unfit for use, maybe you can leave them in the cage as a shedding rock for your Yellowtails. By the way, how you eaten without em? Just curious.

just feed chicken pieces from the store??I buy 5 lb bags of frozen chicken pieces for about $3...Rinse them well and thaw and feed...My Dry's ALL eat them and they process them without thje usual mess with feathers, beaks, etc being pooped all over the cage! Try it..
