Another "best snake for me" question

joeb Apr 24, 2004 09:43 PM

I"m going to apologize in advance. You probably get this alot. Thank you for your help.

K, I want a relatively small snake. I'm not sure what size can be kept in what, so i'll just tell you this.

1. It would need to be kept in a 20-30 gallon.

2.Its ok if it feeds on mice, but i would prefer insects or something else. I'm not even sure if snakes feed on anything else so mice will probably have to do.

3. I like just solid colored snakes, preferably green, white, or black. Definately nothing vibrant or really bright.

4.Something easy going with a very small temperament. Forgiving and definately completely uninclined to bite.

As you can probably tell, i do not know squat about snakes in captivity except that i like them and have always wanted one. PLease include how many feet the snake is so that i have something to go by when comparing size to how many gallons it needs to be kept in. Just to let you know, i will be doing plenty of research, i never take in an animal without knowing full well what i'm getting into and taking into consideration all of its needs and how it will fit in with my lifestyle. Sorry this is so long.

Thanks alot!!! I appreciate the help.

First, although there are some insect- and/or fish-eating snakes, you will want to start with a rodent eater. You can and should buy frozen rodents and thaw to feed. So no need to worry about the killing part.
Most of your needs would be met by a cornsnake. As a matter of fact, I would suggest one. But most have a pattern of some sort, and many are brightly colored. You may look into a "snow" corn, which is basically a white snake, although it does still have the cornsnake pattern. Many will develop hues of yellow, pink or green (usually yellow) on their throat and "neck" as they mature. They are easy-going, relatively small, and will be able to live in your tank. Check out the corn forum for more info and some pics. Duffy

I'm thinkin that the best snake for you would probably be either a rosy boa or a sand boa. While neither of these are unicolor, they both are relitavely easy to keep providing they have sufficent heat, they can both be kept in a 20g and they will most likely readily eat frozen/ thawed mice. Check into them, i think you would enjoy them!

Try an african house snake. The most common house snakes are brown with a nifty irridesence to em. Some of the rarer species are greenish or reddish...

They only get 3-4 feet long. A 20 long tank is great for

A rough green snake has a beautiful Kelly Green color (with a yellow belly). They get to 3' on the average and eat crickets. Care is easy. Put branches in your cage and get a misting bottle for a daily spritz.
