Releasing Babies

wolfgirl591 Apr 24, 2004 10:16 PM

Is it ilegal or safe for the baby alligator lizards to release them back into their natural habitat if they are captive bred? I have a pregnant female that is due to give birth in a month or two and if it is not safe to release the babies then I will either keep them or find suitable homes for them. I will keep a few anyway, even if it is okay to release them. I am crazy about gators!!!!
Thanks in advance

It's illegal to release cb babies or any herps that have been in captivity. As to whether it's safe there a few things to consider: have they been exposed to any other herps from which they could have picked up a disease or parasite, and where did the parent stock originate. You don't want to release an animal that could potentially spread disease to the wild population. You also do not want to genetically contaminate the wild population. If for example, you bred a couple of als from different localities or bred different subspecies you would not want to release these babies.

Thanx for the info. I do have a bearded dragon but they have not come in contact and i disinfect my hands before holding the other. I know you can't tell me what to do, but do you think that it would be ok if the two have not come in contact with eath other?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanx
