Getting my first skink - substrate advice please

Buzby Apr 25, 2004 08:20 AM

I've just put a deposit down on a blue tongued skink and have been doing lots of reading, but would just like to know your opinions/experiences re: substrate and humidity.
These are the things that seem to be most disputed. I have 4 snakes that are kept on shredded paper - would this be a suitable substrate for a skink? If not, please give reccomendations.
Some sites reccommend spraying the viv with water, some reccommend not spraying, but having a dish of sphagnum moss instead - thoughts/opinions please?
Any other advice for a first timer would be gratefully received.

Mine have newspaper and recycled kitty litter paper (the recycled paper that you can buy for kitty litter) as a substrate. Newspaper isn't the most attractive substrate in the world but it's easy to clean and I've never had any problems with it and the kitty litter paper is good because they love to dig in it!
As long as you have a water dish that is big enough for them to soak in, you shouldn't need to spray their cage or put moss in there.
