Few questions on diet, humidity and houseing issues.............

Iguanamom Apr 25, 2004 09:23 AM

Hi all, Ozzy seems to be adjusting to moving his cage to the livingroom quite well. Except we have one problem, since i redid the inside of his cage, he is not pooping in his usual place. I figure he is just not used to it yet, but of course he picked the spot that has carpet to want to poop. So any ideas on how to encourage him to go back to pooping in the bottom of the cage? The other day i had quite a mess, he hung off the side of his cage, in the area that has mesh of course, and just let loose, i couldnt belive how much he peed. Got all over my hardwood floor eeek. So any ideas on getting him to go to the old spot would be great. Also had a diet question. What herbs are ok to give him. I have a herb garden with, chives, basil, oregano, thyme, and parsley. Also what flowers can they have, was wondering about nastursiums, cause i know they are edible for people, wasnt sure if iggys could have them. Trying to get more variety in Ozzy's diet. The salad he is eating now is primarily Collard greens, mustard greens, green beans, butternut squash and cantalope or strawberrys in smaller amounts. Will throw in endive and dandelion greens sometimes too. Just depends on whats available at the grocery store. Oh one more question, what humidity level do you guys try for? I am having a hard time keeping the levels up, due to the size of the cage i imgaine. His cage is 6ft by 4ft. I put a fountain in the other day, thought that might help a bit, till i can get the misting system i want. But still the highest readings i am getting is about 60%. But i mist him at least 3-4 times a day. Which i will add he seems to really like. Its funny he will turn from side to side so i can get all of him. lol Like oh mom you missed a spot over here. Well thats enough questions for now. Thanks for any advice you have. Tami

Thanks for the site, i do like that one how it has the pictures and list the water content and everything. I was surprised it list pasta and rice, i didnt realize those were ok for iggys. Still couldnt find alot of the herbs on there, so they may not be acceptable food for iggys, will have to keep looking for some info on those. But Parsley was on there and thats good cause my parsley is doing really well, i have a ton of it growing. Thanks again. Tami

Thats actually not bad humidity for inside a house, the fountain will help, and if you're misting that often you'll be fine

Iggy's believe it or not like a nice clean bum, and I've found Tempest will wipe it on paper towel taped to newspaper. Maybe try that? I would definately try either covering up or removing the carpet until he's pooping reliably in a single spot, once they pick somewhere they usually stick to that place.

Greenigsociety.org, anapsid.org both have tons of good info on whats toxic or not, not sure about herbs and flowers although I know rose petals are fine (not commercial, pesticides). Sounds like you're doing great so far though

Thanks for the reply. Im going to have to take out the ramp with carpet on it, cause he seems pretty determines he is going to poop there. Thinking about trying a pan of water in the bottom of the cage again. Maybe that will entice him down to the bottom of the cage. I checked out the greenigsociety page and found some good info there, but still havent found info oh most of the herbs im growing. But were in luck if roses are ok cause i have some beautiful red ones that are budding right now. Im big into gardening so this works well with a iggy. Just got the garden planted so here in a couple months i will have enough veggies to feed a heard of iggys lol. Not that im getting anymore lol. But wish i could find some other iggy owners in central Illinois, cause i grow way more than Ozzy could ever dream of eating. Thanks again for the reply. Tami
