Ball python in a cage that is 4' by 2' (LW).....

lilroach56 Apr 25, 2004 10:20 AM

Would that cage be to big for a BP? i would give like 3-4 water bowls and like 6 hides. Would a hatchling or yearling become stressed from the size of that cage?

Most likely that size would probably stress out a young BP. That cage is good enough for an adult though. I dont see how adding extra water bowls would help the sitution either one is sufficiant enough.Best bet is to keep a small one in a smaller enclosure and keep anding to the adult enclosure and when the BP gets big enough it'll have a goood home to move into.
Just my opinion.

what age would you say wouldn't be stressed/lost in a cage that big? the reason why i would add extra water bowls and hides is so it wouldn't have to go across the cage to get to another water bowl.

One water bowl is enough. It could work for a yearling provided that you give him/her plenty of hides - which it sounds like you will. However, it's not just the number of hides, but also that it's the right size - tight, low and snug. Mine seems to prefer (others have agreed) that they seem to prefer round hides.

i know all about the PE hides. I couldn't think of using anything else. So a yearling (2003) wouldn't be to stressed from such a large cage?

Personally, I don't think so - again with the right hides and temps. I put my 2 month old in a 36x18x19 tank immediately after bringing home. My temps and humidity were great, lots of deco and good hides. No problem. Just make sure everything is on target and keep an eye on your little one for signs of problems.

I would say at least a yearling. However as always it just depends on the snake as well. Some of my BP's dont even use a hide most of the time in the rack system. But my pastel Male is a bit less outgoing and like to be in the hide most of the time. I could probably put one of my females in a large enclosure with decorations and hides and they would do fine. However I would bet putting my pastel in there and he will be stressed and probably go off feed whenever he felt like it.
