feild collecting question

i live in michigan on the edge of ottowa and allegan counties, and was told we have milks here. does anyone know if collecting is legal, if they are in my area, and any tips on habitat, is it better near water, feilds, or woods, do i look under rocks, logs, or man made sructures and hideing places, thanks in advance, im new to this area and still looking for info on any local herps

i live in the U.P. (of michigan) and have asked local DNR officals about collecting native reptiles.they were not sure on most of my questions,but i did find this out:you need a fishing license to collect reptiles,you cannot collect reptiles on the endangered species list,reptiles can only be collected for personal use.they would not define "personal use" for me.they told me to contact the DNR office in lansing for specific information.the eastern milk snake is native to the lower penninsula.the book "michigan snakes" is helpful,it's available at your local MSU extension office,i bought mine used on half.com.

dont you just love the ability of some to lump together any thing with scales, any way thanks for the info i havent been able to find any books so i will look for that one thanks again
