2 questions from a first time dragon owner.

Turtlequest Apr 25, 2004 12:18 PM

I just bought a bearded dragon from a reptile show. I have alot of turtles and decided i wanted a bearded dragon. I have a couple of questions i need answered if anyone can help me out please.

1. My new beardie is about as big as my pinky, how many small crickets should i feed him daily? He ate 10 the first 10 minutes i put him in the cage. Also how often should i offer him veges?

2. I bought that light that is a 60 watt heat light and UV light. 30 dollars too!! but it seems like a nice light. If i leave the light on all day, and shut it off at night when im sleeping, how should the dragon get its heat source during the night? Or does it accept colder temps during the night time?

Thank You

feed crix no larger than the space between his eyes, for that size 1/8 or 1/4. You can feed him as many as he will eat in a 10 minute period. do not leave extra crix in the enclosure or they can and will chew on your BD. You can offer a bit of veggies every day but dont be upset if he does not eat them for a few months. Make sure you suppliment as well. There is a list of foods at www.beautifuldragons.com

Get a digital thermometer to measure temps. Basking=110-115 cool side=80s. night temps can drop to 70s for a little guy mid 60s when they are bigger.

I agree with Bennett. We also use the night lights when they are little in the winter months. but we live in Wisconsin and winters can be rough here. Good Luck!
