Our new enclosure (pic)

Our Greco Roman Gecko Creation

It is 4 feet (48 inches) across. We used crown molding for the back platform, wedding cake decoration columns for the staircase, and the shelter is made primarily of Styrofoam which Shannon (my wife) painstakingly cut and glued to form. I painted over the surfaces with a non-toxic rock paint recipe to give the Styrofoam a more stone like texture. It took over a week to complete, but we are very pleased with the way it turned out.

Now it shall be filled with leopard geckos.

The right side of the tank is the warm side (right side of the staircase).
We built that "Parthenon" structure there to serve as the two warm hides (note there are two openings). Beneath it there is an under tank heater; which keeps the two chambers warm. Both chambers actually have Tupperware containers inside. The Tupperware in one of the two chambers (the right side), contains peat moss – this is the humid hide. I mist this hide often – especially when I am expecting a shed. The other hide, left side chamber, is warm, but dry. The roof of this Parthenon is NOT glued on. So, I easily remove it to access both of the chambers for cleaning, misting or maintenance.

The left side of the staircase is the cool side of the enclosure. There is a rock hide there now (you can see it in the picture). This hide doesn’t really match the theme, but it has been a favorite of my female for a few years so I moved it into this new enclosure for her. It just looks small as the tank is quite large (4 feet across). But what can I say? It’s her favorite.

I usually keep any water or calcium dishes on the cool side. If you look to the left of the staircase, you can see the calcium dish. This photo was taken at an angle and the water dish is hidden behind the staircase in this view. I assure you it is there.

As far as food dishes for the Leo(s), I usually do not use any. I release crix into the tank for 15 to 30 minutes. If any crix remain after that, I pull them out. Just in case I leave one in there accidentally, I have a small dish of gut load and a carrot coin which you can see in the very front left corner of the enclosure. This way any stray crix that get left behind have something to eat and hopefully won’t bite my gecko.

Hope this answers your questions.

AMAZING, what a fun set up. The only thing I would be concerned about it the sand (it looks like sand). Oh and the temps, I would imagine a tank that large would be hard to heat and keep at a steady temp. How do you heat it? I have also heard that very large set-ups can cause strees, how does your leo like it? I ask because I would like to set one up.

You are correct. The Substrate is Sand. I have been using this sand with my adults for 2 years without incident. I spray a mist over this sand when I clean the tank to give it a shell, sort of.

I house one female in this enclosure at the moment. She hides alot, but does climb the stairs and wander the shelf during dusk hours. I would like to add at least one more to the enclosure, I was hoping to hold out until August and make a purchase (or two) at the National show in Daytona.

With regards to heating and cooling...
