Light Cycles

BeardieKid14 Jun 15, 2003 09:19 AM

I was wondering how important it is for leopard geckos to have light cycles? I have seen that leopard geckos are kept in rack systems which do not have light. I have my leos in with a infared night bulb and they seem to be doing fine. I was thinking of moving them into a room in my basement which is quickly becoming the reptile room and I was wondering if it would be ok because it is very dark and there are no windows. Please post your views on the issue.

They dont really need any special lighting. The only light my leos get is the light that shines through the window. So, naturally, it will be lighter during day than during night.

We keep our geckos in a room that in the winter time gets no natural sunlight. We installed 2 8ft flourescent light fixtures in the room (24ft x 24 ft room. Each light fixture hsa 2 bulbs in it. We leave them on all day long and then just turn them off at night. This has worked very well for us.

We keep along the same line as Pete's. All shop lights, basking, and uvb are kept on the same schedule with 14-16 hours of light during the summer and 6-7 during the winter. Ambient light will penetrate the boxes well enough to establish physiological stimulation for breeding and cooling.
