HELP! TWITCHING TURTLE!!!

bl1ss5m Apr 25, 2004 03:38 PM

I just noticed my turtle Spike (2 inches give or take) was basking on his rock twitching. His back legs twitch randomly and his front arms move like he's trying to scratch himself or hit his head. I've never seen this before and I don't know what to do. Any advice or info appreciated.

My turtle does this, too. He seems otherwise healthy so I don't worry too much about this...I always thought maybe he got an itch, or just felt like twitching a bit. Of course, I'm not an expert, and this may very well be something, but unless Mike does it excessively, I wouldn't worry about it.
Does anyone know if this actually is something?

I don't know why they twitch, but just thought I'd let you guys know mine will twitch the odd time also. He seems to get annoyed and jumps into the water to stop it.

Hah...i think it's an annoyance response. Sometimes when my turtles bask, i would wiggle a finger in front or near them and they'd do the same thing--with head, legs, etc. And then if I don't stop, they'd plop in the water. It's like they don't want to be disturbed.

Thanx for the comments I feel much better now, and when he goes into the water he's fine too. I guess it's just a turtle thing.
I've just never seen it happen before! I've had him for over a year, I wonder why it happened now.

It is a common thing. Perhaps their skin gets a bi itchy once they dry out on the basking platform. I also noticed this with some of my turtles when they are in the warmest part of the basking area as well.
