Question about mixing tortoises and lizards...

RKGrapeJr Apr 25, 2004 04:55 PM

I have 4 sulcata tortoises (ranging in age from 6 months to 4 years) and have been thinking of aquiring a bearded dragon. If I were to do this and feed them separately, since they have relatively the same climate requirements, would it be possible to house them together. I know that most people here are against housing different tortoises together but I was not sure about lizards and tortoises. Please let me know

If they are all captive raised and have never been exposed to others of the same species, I don't see a problem provided you keep the Sulcatas well fed.
Be aware that Tortoises and Lizards in general carry bugs that will kill one another.

its basically the same deal as mixing torts together.
I'd say its safe for about an hour at a time, but i wouldn't want to take the chance and house them together, mingle yes roomates no.
the reason behind this opinion is that it is a health risk for both animals and different diseases could develope that could kill both your pets
its just not worth saving a few bucks

I remember reading once where someone's tortoise ATE their pet lizard. Can't remember the details...

I know that my sulcata is aggressive with smaller torts. I guess that could just be a territorial thing. My beardie is really lazy and probably wouldn't run from the tort until it was too late. A small tort might not do too much damage, but my larger one could.

So, my opinion is that it probably not a good idea....But then again, I keep tortoises and llamas together...and most people would say that's a BAD idea.

I am no expert but... When my sulcata was young I did keep him with my 2 bearded dragons the things I was always sure to do were seperate him when crickets ( evil b*@tards) where in there and pick up poop asap. he still will eat anything but is far to large to keep in a 75 gallon
