Newbie lepord gecko questions! PLEASE HELP

terrible_one Apr 25, 2004 05:37 PM

Hey guys if there is a really good book or website about these questions you can just send me in the right direction. Thanx in advance.

Anyway i have some questions about the lepord gecko which i am thinking about geting for my b-day which is in 2 weeks! I have owned an iguana, a kingsnake, and a ball python in the past, but dind't have to much luck with them. Now im older and ready to be there. OK here they go baby.

I like to handle my reptiles. Is a leprd gecko a lizard i can take out of its cage to show my friends and stuff even when im just "chilen in my room"?

Do they bite and poop on you and wiggle to get away a lot when u hold them. or when u try to pick them up do they go nuts? That annoys me!

How much are they?

Do paper towels work?

Can they escape easily?

OK guys hopefully you can help em as i wanna get one soon. If they are not like the questions maybe there is a lizard geared toward my style you can let me know about? Thanx all!

Yes you can handle them. Many of them seem to like being handled. Paper towls are the best substrate. They range in price from about $20.00 to $1,000.00 . No matter what the price is though, you still get a great lizard. I would check out goldengategeckos.com and read her care sheet.

Hope I helped you,
Matt

Q: I like to handle my reptiles. Is a leprd gecko a lizard i can take out of its cage to show my friends and stuff even when im just "chilen in my room"?

A: Its ok to show people, but if you aren't comfortable with other people holding your gecko dont let them. Kind of like, look but dont touch. Yea its ok for the gecko to come out of its enclosure, just as long as you keep an eye on it and it doesn't escape! LOL

Q: Do they bite and poop on you and wiggle to get away a lot when u hold them. or when u try to pick them up do they go nuts? That annoys me!

A: They can bite. I have never had any of my gecko bite me. Some leos like to be held and dont mind it, where there are some leos who have personalities that never like to be held. Its just the way they are.

Q: How much are they?

A: The range in price. Some can start as low as $25-$40 and some can get up to $1000 or more. I suggest that you buy from a breeder instead of a pet store gecko. It will be alot healthier, and its CB. Dont take your chance on a sick gecko, its not worth it.

Q: Do paper towels work?

A: Yes paper towels work, and thats all you'll ever need. They are cheap and easy to clean up. Sand impacts them, dont waste your money and get sand. Leos dont care what they are housed on. Paper towels work just fine.

Q: Can they escape easily?

A: Well it depends on what your housing the gecko in and itf its escape proof or not? Put you leo into something that is not escape proof. A 10, 15, or 20 gallon tank will be sufficient. Just make sure you have a screen top.

Take Care

1. yes you can hold them and stuff but dont grab their tails because they can fall off.

2. no they wont bite, unless your feeding them and you put your fingers infront of them ( they dont bite hard then )

3. 1. They dont wiggle and try to get away from you unless your squeezing them. 2. you'll need to get a undertank heater so they can have enough heat to digest their food. I didnt have one for the first week and whenever i held her she always went to the bathroom because of my body temperature.

4. if you get them at a pet store they are around 40-50 dollars. From a breeder it depends on the type you get they can range from 80-1000 dollars.

5. Paper towels is a great flooring for them because it is easy to clean up.

6. If you have a lid on your cage they will not escape.

P.S. If you are gettin an adult and dont already have a cage i would go with a 20 gallon long.

Good Luck.

I agree w/ all the other posts....but a couple other things....you said you get annoyed by them freaking out when you pick them up....I find my little baby does that...so if you want one that doesnt freak out...you probley want an adult thats used to handleing...and if you get a UTH....monitor your temps close on the bottom of the cage sometimes they can get over 110 w/ just a UTH...and most likely you will have to get ethier a retrostat (I found these wayyyy over priced)...I use a lamp dimmer I got from walmart for much cheaper and it does the same thing....I also use a light to maintain air temps....but you dont really have to.....It might help you to get a book on leos.
