First Timer and Possible Egg Binding

centrewood Jun 15, 2003 10:01 AM

I have a first time bred Albino Motley that laid her first clutch (5 fertile, large) on Friday the 13th at 52 days. She is 42”, and weighed 300 g at breeding – a bit of a lightweight but reasonable size. She is a live feeder and gets good exercise in here 30 gal long tank and we get her out ‘to run around’ a couple times a week. The problem we have is there is two more eggs that have yet to be laid – they are end to end approx. 1.5 inches from her vent. She doesn’t appear stressed out and the eggs are not rigid – soft and confirm as she curls around. She was in her box for 36 hours from Friday to last night. She came out and took a real long drink at midnight and wondered around her tank for about 90 minutes. She has been back in her box some today, but still comes out. My question is, how much time should I give her until I having a vet check and possibly aspirate the back egg? C. Love notes in her book to address by 7 days, but what has others experiences been with a first timer and egg binding? My intent is to give her ample time (since aspirating from the side is invasive), but not jeopardize her health by waiting too long. It is my first time too so I’m concerned and a bit worried. Good snake – calm and I don’t want to lose her. Thanks for reading and responding….

I'm by no means an expert, but I had the same experiance about a month ago with my female snow that was about the same size.
She laid all but her last two eggs within a few hours and laid 2nd to last egg after about 36 hours but after 4 days she still didn't lay her last egg, so I took her to the local herp vet and had the egg aspirated. From everything I've read and what the vet told me is that usually if they haven't laid them after 48 hrs they are usually unsalvagable anyway. One of the big risks you run if you wait more than a week is the egg will solidify and you will be unable to aspirate it, which can lead to bigger problems.
If it were me and she hasn't laid by monday I would get her to the vet.
As I stated I'm no expert and if other people have better info please correct me.

As it turned out, there were three eggs that were bound in my Albino Motley female. She was not able to pass them over the weekend (60 hours) so off to the vet we went last night after work. The vet was able to aspirate two of the three (one was infertile) with the posterior one aspirating 10ccs!! It was huge!! (hence the blockage). Redeye passed the remains early this morning so we are on our way to recovery. She has lost a bit of weight - down to about 180g. No double clutching this summer - just a smorgasboard of pinkies and mice!!

Thank you steve84 for your input. It got me to move a day or two earlier then I would have on my own....
