Water monitor at Hamburg..

SHvar Jun 15, 2003 10:12 AM

They were told to remove this water monitor and lock it outside or in the shower area because it could be a danger to the children roaming around. Has to be 8 ft long.

Yeah...that water was a beast. Initially they wouldn't allow the guy to bring it in without it's mouth taped up. I actually taped the guy hoisting it up on his shoulder outside with my digital videocamera. It was definitely a sight to see, probably the highlight of the show.

They wouldnt let the guy bring it in unless its mouth was taped but when he did as they wished they told him to take it out or lock it in the shower area. If they were worried about peoples kids getting bit or what ever then the solution is simple parents do their job and control their kids not letting them run amuck.

I saw him walking it outside, he said he had it about 10 years and he feeds it chicken parts and rarley he feeds it rodents. I did not bother asking why. It looked like it had something wrong with its eye. It also looked like it's belly had been burned or cut. I saw scars when he went to put it in his car. He and his friends bought a few gators too. I feel bad for them also.

..and prevent him from ever owning another animal. What he has done to that animal is every bit as bad as the water with the burned out eyes.
I hope it doesn't have to suffer too much longer. D.

Hes owned it for many years and its alive yet. Maybe every pet store, importer, dealer, pet owner with emaciated, dieing, dehydrated, underweight, parasite infested animals that only live a short time should have the same done to them. Instead of having one die years down the road, they kill hundreds of thousands every week. I dont speak water monitor or know the animal personally, but if it is in fact happy as many fat (yes I said fat, not overweight) people are, then why be upset?
As I said I dont agree with the animals weight but Ive seen thousands of much worse off animals without even trying to look for them. The condition this animal is in was from being fed too much, yet if you look at pics that have been here or may still be here in the galleries, Ive seen more just as fat.

He told me it was ten years old. About him not owning anymore animals I said above how he and his friends bought some gators. I tried to talk one of them out of it but he was just so fixed on that it was a gator and they got big and ate other animals. I asked him what he would do with it when it got huge. The answer...."Ima gonna go to florida and let him be free" Funny answer really.. yea funny how it makes me sad....

I will agree that some of the things they brought I wouldn't & honestly as a friend I tried to talk them out of it too, but I can't spend someone elses money. Actually they do have the space to keep them but at times do get over excited. As for the gators how many people at the show got gators look at how many were for sale. More then just my associates brought gators. I opened a can of worms when I introduced them to reptile shows. but please don't talk about people you don't know. And Mike you are not qualified to talk.

Why should he be arrested? I know the guy who owns it. It has a dog harness on it. The mouth is taped b/c the security at the show required this. So what else is wrong?

Dragoon Jun 16, 2003 02:25 PM

How is that animal's condition any less apalling than an emaciated one???
People wouldn't hestitate to point fingers and cry foul if they saw an animal being starved, now would they?
I think its worse seeing one in the condition this animal is. Obesity happens at a much longer time period than starvation. In other words, the owner has had plenty of time to see the effects of his husbandry on the animal, and correct it. Yet he obviously has chosen to do nothing.
Humans are such warped b*st*ards.

A little heavy but so are alot of them in the wild (yes, typically ones that hang around humans and get thrown food). I have a hard time keeping my big ones wieght down as well they seem to really pack it on with age. My oldest is 7 years old.

Good on the guy for rearing it up for 10 years that takes alot of time and consideration when owning an animal for so many years. He obviously did not get it that size if he has had him 10 years. If it had more cage space and I'm guessing higher basking temps. the weight still wouldn't come down much but the animal would be able to grow length instead of out. Thats atleast what I have noticed with my waters anyways.

To bad he had to tape it's mouth shut. Was it for sale or just on display?

I was able to get in that bathroom to see the water. owner told me it was 6 foot 10 inches and 90 lbs. heres a pic of me risking my hand. when i walked into the bathroom, the lizard was in a darkened corner and whipping at his owner. very impressive, and i stayed a few feet away and looked for the exit signs. nice mainland asian salvator but it could stand to lose 30 lbs or more. -john a

It is 6'10 75 lbs. It has a dog harness on it to better control him in public. He is a gentle guy I babysat him for 4 months my 5yr.old daugther can ride on his back. The tape is what the gaurds at the show requested. any other ?s ask me.
