Empty Eggs Question

mobmilli Apr 25, 2004 07:46 PM

Ok,

I'm going on wim here and very confused. Can a male lay empty eggs?? Our Draco now 2yrs old has all the signs of a male (but we never had him offically checked) and was sold to us a male.

The last few weeks he's been really wierd. Not eating well, pacing his cage, digging the crap out of his cage, just not normal beardie behavior for him. We gave him a big hide box thinking maybe for some reason he thinks he wants to brumate again.

Well today after cleaning through his cage, we found what appears to be collapsed eggs. They were in the hide box which had been buried and covered over by sand. They are white/but also kind of clearish colored. And now Draco can't get enough to eat.

So could we have been wrong and our Draco really be a girl, or is it possible for some reason for males to lay eggs as well??
If Draco's a girl, how often do they go through this behavior??

thanks in advance

I'm no expert, but I've never heard of a male laying eggs. I have, however, heard of females who laid infirtile eggs without having any contact with males. Kind of like a cycle, I guess.

Sounds to me like Draco is a girl.

they can lay up to 8 clutches a year although it would be uncommon to lay that many if she is alone. Do you have any other BDs?

No Draco is and has always been single. Never any other contact with another dragon. We've had him 2yrs now.

How often can we expect this egg laying??

beardiedragon Apr 25, 2004 08:12 PM

they can lay every 30 days but without a male to stimulate them that would be uncommon. Make sure that you give her lots of food and supliment with calcium.

My female Olga laid her unfertile eggs only 17 days apart. If I remember correctly it was 26 in the first clutch and 19 in the second. I hope she is done for the season... :-/

Thanks for the info,

Where do they store these internally? Draco had no weight gain at all. We actually thought he(well she now) was starting to loose a little weight.

Well time to tell our son his Draco is really a girl and we could expect to see the eggs again.

they store eggs in their belly & chest, anywhere they fit. They are soft and maliable so they can fit a lot in a small area. when they are infertile they are smaller and softer so take up less space. It is easy to miss them by a visual inspection.

We just dug them all out, and there was 16 of them.Is this normal??
Some of them still soft and not collapsed.

So how often will Draco do this??

Your Draco is a girl. Males don’t lay eggs.

It is quite common that females lay unfertile eggs. How often varies.

Make sure to provide extra food and lots of extra calcium for Draco now – she needs it. Keep an eye on her and look for signs of egg-laying in the future (digging, restlessness etc) The female needs a place to lay the eggs (fertile or not). If she can’t find a good spot she can “keep the eggs” and become egg-bound, which is dangerous.

I have a female that kind of behaves like a male too. Especially towards other females. She also displays a black beard a lot. All dragons are different. But your Draco is definitely a girl!
