how to feed large boas???

reptile_dude Apr 25, 2004 07:48 PM

I was wondering how some of you who have adult size boas feed them. do you feed them by placing the prey in with the snake or do you use tongs and dangle the prey infront of them. are there pros or cons to doing it either way. I currently have a small 6 mos boa that i take out of its enclosure and put in a rubbermade bin to feed. i use plyers to hold the mouse by the tail but, wondered as it gets bigger if just putting the prey in with him would be better?

thanx

I still take all of my snakes out of cage and feed them in rubbermaids or the big plastic garbage cans. I just think it keeps them associating the move with eating and not me getting into cage. It just works for me and gives me a chance to clean cage and change water etc... Thanks Andy

I personally do both "techniques". I will with the animals that I know will take the prey item just place it in the enclosure..close the door and move to the next one. I do have a stubborn blind in one eye male that needs to see motion before he tackles and eats the prey item.. I tried a couple times to get him to take it just placed in and he left them over night. (A waste of a couple jumbo rats )
