i dont have any heat bulbs but will a regular bulb in a reflective fixture work

Josh06 Apr 25, 2004 08:34 PM

Yea, that will work, but it will more than likely get way too hot. Do you have a rheostat or thermostat?? That would control the temp of the light and make it suitable. If you dont have one, try to use the lowest wattage bulb you can find, which still might be too hot. Also, you need a heat source for the night and the light wouldn't work for that. I would suggest just going out and buying a red heat light that is made for reptiles at any petstore. They are only about 6 dollars, so you could probably pick one up.

but will he be ok at room temp till then, i dont wanna cook him

Josh06 Apr 25, 2004 08:38 PM

to try and get a low wattage one. I would suggest a 25 or 30 watt. They can be found in the reptile section at most petstores.

personally i like the human heaters better...its cheaper with 3 heating levels built in...medium is usually around 83 degrees...so that would do it...if ur using incandescent...depending on what kind of enclosure ur using...this is what ive found....ten gallon screen lid 75 watt incandescent usually works well....and add wats or subtract watts accordingly..hope this helps

If you have a heating pad for people you can use that temporarily for a heat source. Set it to low and put a thermometer in the enclosure to see what temp it gets to.

Terry

Just get a 60 watt clear bulb and you should be fine. I didnt have a heating pad for 1 week and my gecko is healthy. The picture in my profil was took 3 days after i got her and she was kinda skinny then but i got her to a good weight.

Did you monitor your temps when you used the 60 watt bulb? I ask, because I had tried this and my temps got up to and over 110 degrees. I was just wondering if you had a different experience with it.

Yes i monitered it, i had a thermometer half way up the glass right under it and it said 87 degrees. Plus i had a hide right under the heat lamp so it was cooler in there. She also has a hide on the cooler end. ( i have a 10 gallon tank, i am getting either a 20 gallon within a week or if my friend gets his 40 gallon breeder this week i am buying his 29 gallon tank ).

really it all depends on the temperature of the room that the tank is in.

leo_boy Apr 26, 2004 06:34 PM

your gecko will be fine. mine never have any heating in their cages and they're fine.
