LEUCISTIC DRAGONS

rlbonjour Apr 25, 2004 09:24 PM

I was wondering what the difference was between a leucistic and snow bearded dragon? My second question is if you mated two snows together that were het for leucistic how would you tell the snow babies from the leucistic babies? Thanks for all replies.

A Snow or Hypo is just a lighter colored dragon with pink, yellow, or light orange markings, the better looking snows show very little color and more white coloration. Most are patternless. They are just a lighter variation of most beardeds. Leucistics fall in the same category as Hypomelanistics, aka Hypopastels, they have clear nails and cannot produce or show the same dark coloration as normal beardeds because of the decreased amount of melanin in their skin. There are no true leucistics yet, the ones marketed are just a form of Hypopastel with most of the yellows and oranges bred out of the line. If you crossed two hets that are snows, the Hypomelanistic babies will be even lighter than the other hatchlings who don't show the lighter colors until after their first shed. Also, the Hypomelanistic babies would have clear nails.
