Braeden, the Leo who Refuses Mealworms AND Waxworms AND Pinkies, is Gaining Back his Weight!!!

misswindom Apr 25, 2004 10:13 PM

When I got him, he was about 38 grams, but he was refusing to eat, so he quickly got down to 34 grams. No, I did not take him to a vet - I've had him for about a month, I believe, and I've been trying different foods to try to stimulate his appetite. I was on the verge of taking him until I realized I hadn't tried *bleh* crickets...

He turned his nose up at everything that ALL of my leos LOVE - Mealworms, Waxworms, even Pinkies! I guess he's not in to treats??! lol Anyhoo.. so I gave him Crickets, and BOY did he go after those things!!!

SOOO.. Now he's back up to 37g - I JUST weighed him. I had taken him out of the cage to gather rogue crickets, and BOY was he heavier than what I remembered. He's got an actual belly now, so I had to weigh him, and I was very much pleased!

Anyhoo... I just had to share my happiness! Guess I have really stock on those crickets now. I even bought one of those cricket keepers - with the black tubes that the things crawl into. It's WONDERFUL. I don't have to worry about sticking my hand into the nasty things - and I only have to touch them when they either a) escape, or b) go uneaten (I do NOT want crickets trying to eat the gecko! BAD!) lol And my other leos seem to really like them, too!!!

Thats really really cool, i'm very happy for you and Braeden. I do have a question though. How does the cricket keeper thing work with the tubes? I've been feeding crickets and mealworms to my new geckos but they seem to like the crickets better and eat them all up veyr fast. I'd like something to hold the crickets in (have a kritter keeper right now) but i have to pick out the crickets and with the very small ones i tend to squish them in the process....can we say GROSS HAHAHAHAHA

Thanks
Red

Go to the pet store and ask for a cricket keeper - they're VERY cool.

What it is, it's like a critter keeper, but in the lid are 2 to 4 holes, depending on the size. In each hole goes this black tube. The black tube has a black hole on the end that is outside. The crickets crawl up in there because it's dark. When it's feeding time, you pull out the tube, cap the other end (it's included), and put the trap door on the hole in the lid, so crickets can't get out. Then you put it down in the leo's cage, shake how ever many crickets you want out, and voila! Just recap it so the rest don't get out, then feed the next cage or put them back in.

I got the smaller one, and it cost me almost $6. Worth every penny!

Now, though, I have to hear the the things chirp YUCK. My "zoo" is in my room lol.. And it's gonna be like this til I finally get to move out!!!

I've seen them i just didn't know exactly how they work, thanks for the info. I'm going to feed crickets to my aft's and new leo as they are taking them readily, however i'm still going to encourage mealworms....

In my last batch of crickets i picked up there was a cherper(male) and once i realized that, i fed him to the leo right away...i'm not a fan of the cherping hehe. My bedroom is now across the hall and i could still hear him!!!! I sure hope i can switch the three geckos who are taking crickets over to mealworms but the aft's especially are so tiny that i want them eating....even if that means crickets.

Thanks again for the info. I'll be going down to pick up some more supplies at the pet store so i'll pick one up

Hmmm, that cricket keeper sounds handy. One of mine doesnt care for mealworms too much, but will eat them when she has to. I kept a few crickets on hand for a while, but they are just too gross. I might look into this cricket keeper. Oh, and congratz on finding something your gecko likes.
