Lids with troughs....are they necessary?

cv768 Apr 25, 2004 11:09 PM

We have a little trough setup going with dirt and I was wondering if we need to put a lid on it...they heat is good but I hear all this talk of humidity and temperature with lids and i get confused....

So, is it necessary to have a lid on the trough?

if it's a matter of escapees I'm comforatble that they are unable to escape over the sides of the trough due to the 2 foot deep factor plus the curled in edges.

any suggestion about a lid? or can i leave it the way it is?

Hi
I made lids for my trough and they work great. I have them because it can keep the inside warm in the winter and I open it up in the summer if it needs to get cool. Also it keep's things from falling in and also you can put things on top of the lid.

Hope I helped a little

Don't know if you're considering a lid that is solid covering the entire top, or not, but I would have to say that is they can't get out, and humidity is low, no top is necessary. Plenty of ventilation is important also, and a top can restrict that. Now something like a framed screen top to rest your lights and such should be alright, though I've read that the reptisun UVB tubes need to be around 12" from the lizard's subtrate.

i try and LIMIT ventilation as much as possible in our setups. but of course, that is us

about having a lid period, without it, you are just ASKING for the animals to escape, and at some point they will, and you will kick yourself...
