I think my Ball might have RI, Any advice?

zhenchok Apr 25, 2004 11:24 PM

I tried holding my '02 female today and noticed her leaking small amounts of water out of her mouth. She did attempt to upen her mouth once or twice. She didn't have a great shed lately, so I've soaked hear a few times last week to remove the extra skin. I also think that she made a few clicks whle I held her. I don't know what to do. She is in a 40 gallon aquarium turned sideways with the screen on the side, her current temps are 90 on the warm side. I'm going to increase it to about 95. Any recomendations would really be appreciated, she is my only snake. If I need to take her to a vet, does anyone know of a good one in Oakland County, MI? Thanks, Dave.

Sorry for a few spellings mistakes above, I wanted to include that I noticed her eyes beeing a little dented a sign of dehydration, but I don't know how to treat it right now. Thanks, Again.

Interesting problem - dehydration could be a consequence of using a screen 'top' (or sided) viv - so you would treat that in the short term by adding extra water dishes, maybe placing one over the heat source, and perhaps misting the viv as well.

Ironically, humidity can be a cause of and aggravating factor to resp infections, and I believe that part of the treatment regime for that would be to reduce humidity!

This is just my opinion, and I am sure some of the more experienced herpers on here will advise you as well, but I think you need to take the snake to a good vet to treat the infection, and rethink your set-up to manage the humidity levels on an ongoing basis. You may also want to monitor humidity levels with a hygrometer and increase them when the snake is about to shed.

Resp infections can be related to certain substrates or to stress, which are both things to think about in terms of your set-up also.

Just my (relatively inexperienced) opinion

Simon

To really hold in humidity, I suggest putting some plastic wrap oer your screen top. I only do this around shedding time, however. But it holds humidity in darned good!
