I sometimes think the same thing myself. I have an 11 month old burm and he used to hiss all the time when I would take him out of his old cage which quickly got too small. When I move him to his new home it drastically reduced. He now only hisses when he doesn't want to come out, for instance too short of a time after a feed or during shed. I respect his wishes if I think they are warrented. If he hisses for no obvious reason I would still take him out for a handleing session. I do understand what you mean about having a huge snake who hisses and tries to intimidate his keeper. Not a good pet. Just keep handleing I guess. I've read that they calm down with maturity. It makes sense too. A juvinile burm is food for a lot of animals in the wild. With size and experience they should settle down.

Hissing in burms (or snakes in general) is standard procedure. I personally think its just their way of talking. My big female doesnt hiss hardly at all but my male hisses like crazy. Bottom line is that you shouldnt fear the snake, respect it yes, but fear it no. Id rather have a big burm that hisses and warns you then a quiet one thatll nail you without warning.

ahhh burmese pythons and hissing go together like peanut butter and jelly lol. thats the snakes personality and it does that to intimidate you. mine hisses and puffs up like he is macho man. i just do what i gotta do to let him know- i respect you but i do not fear you. he hisses and all that when he is getting tooken out but after that he is ok. its just what they do, you'll get used to it. handle it alot and keep it fed and you should be just fine!
