New Poster with Turtle

topjars Apr 26, 2004 04:51 AM

Hi Everyone,
My name is Gary ( first time poster) and Ive been fortunate enough to have a turtle walk into my life about three weeks ago.

Wow!
Ive only ever owned dogs and galahs before so its somewhat of an intriguing experience to have a turtle.

He or she is so cute. Which begs my first question.....how do I tell the sex?

Second question is more of a concern. It did begin to eat but now it doesnt seem to want to anymore. Is that because the little cutey is getting his grub in my garden? Ive fed it "turtle food" which looks like red mince and smells like fish. It comes in small tiles covered by aluminium foil.

I was able to hand feed the little beggar originally....but no more???he doesnt eat it?

Ive built it a small pond about 150 mm deep x .5 meter long by .25 metre wide. Its not in the sun ( which Im presuming is a good idea) ???

Last question. How do I deter my dog from flipping it over? Ive caught my Tebterfield Terrier in the act and scolded it and smacked its nose...hopefully thats good enough; but I dont think so. ( Shes as protective"read jealous" as anything.

Thanks ...Gary

Hi Gary -

Love Galahs they are awesome birds!

We just need a little more info. on the turtle. Do you have any idea what kind it is? Can you post a picture of it? Can't really answer any of your questions without knowing what kind of turtle we are dealing with.

Steve

Hi Honuman,
Im told its a snake-necked turtle.
I live in Port Pirie South Australia and apparently they are common...although Ive never actually come across any until now.

He or she, is a bit bigger than a mans hand is yellow/cream/ pink underneath and perfectly symetrical in shape...I spose they all are.
How do I post a picture? (I dont have a website) I have a magnificent photo though.
Thanks
Regards...Gary
