I went out to my favorite spot this weekend. It was a bit cooler than I had hoped, but I managed to find a lot of ringnecks and a rather large milksnake. However, the timber rattlers were nowhere to be found. That makes it three trips in two years, and I only found one rattlesnake (last year). And, that was a small specimen. I'm beginning to become concerned. 10 years ago I couldn't make a trip without finding at least a couple of 3 foot timbers, and I would always find a kingsnake or rat snake, something big.
I'm going to head back out in a couple weeks when it's a bit warmer, but my optimism is low.
I'll post a couple pics of the milk and a worm snake I found last year, as soon as I get the site's photo hosting protocol down.
Please, anyone with some good luck finding horridus in Madison County, post here and let me know. I'm hoping it's bad luck and not a population decline that's getting me.
Thanks,
Whitey

whitey,
i have only made one trip so far this year searching for timbers but i had no luck. i think the water was to high at the time and everything was soggy and wet but i'm not sure. this is my first year to seriously pursue herping in iowa so i don't know for sure if they're on the decline but from what i hear they probably are. i would be very interested in going out with you sometime to look for timbers and other snakes. i live south of des moines in warren county but i will be herping all surrounding areas. contact me at ballpythons4u@netscape.com if you would be interested on going on some herping trips together.

happy herping,
adam
