Incubator

redeye48 Apr 26, 2004 11:31 AM

I built an incubator using intructions I had found in a Gekco book. I used a 10 gallon aquarium that I filled 1/3 with water, submerged an heater. I put a plastic container filled with vermiculite on top of some rocks, well clear of the water, and covered the entire tank with plastic. THe temperature in the plastic container has settled at 84. My concern is the humidity. My plastic container has a top that has air holes; but the overall setup seems awfully damp. Any thoughts?

These types of incubators work quite well with many types of eggs from geckos from more tropical, humid environments, but I honestly don't know any leopard gecko keepers that have had much success with them because of the humidity. I would also like to know if there is anyone who has used an incubator like this!

I use a coleman cooler for my male incubator. Filled about 1/3 with water, a submersiable water heater two bricks with a piece of metal closet shelving to set my egg containers on. I use sealed rubbermaid containers with a 1-1 ratio by weight of medium(perilite) and water. The temps stay between 88.4 and 90.2. I have used this for 3 years and it has worked well so far. If you use sealed containers you should be ok.

I'm currently using the 10 gallong aquarium incubator. I've used it in the past and have hatched out leos... but the only problem I see is that it loses too much heat through the glass and the lid. Also, the humidity level is hard to manage sometimes. I'd say using a coleman cooler would work better, but you can use an aquarium... it'll just take a little bit more work to hatch anything.
