Oh, HerpHelmz(Michael) explained how there are a few things that can help you tell regals apart on his website. Regal ringnecks are regal-colored, green or more of a light grayish color and they are alot thicker. They also have a neck ring that is a different more darker colored orange(if they have a ring). Northerns are smaller, have a orange or yellow ring and are usually black or gray. They are very easy to tell apart if you know what you are looking at, I only have experience with regals.

Lucky you Sean...I have only one regal. But to answer the question look at the belly. Northerns have a plain (unspotted belly and lack the red/orange warning color at the tail.

Aww man I completely forgot about that. Anyways though, the ring color is truly what can help you tell the difference if comparing to a western sub species. I have only 2 regals though, I plan to get more, pretty decent snakes.

The belly, the dark orange ring and the size of the regals can help you tell them apart from almost any other sub-species besides a few of the Western ones.
