Acquiring an Eastern Indigo...

kingfan Jun 15, 2003 11:42 AM

Hello, like many others that have posted here, I have an interest in acquiring an Eastern Indigo Snake. I live in Rhode Island and was wondering which breeders would be closest so as to reduce the stress of travel time on the animal and what the availability of babies are this year. If they are all spoken for this year, is there a list for next year? Also, to my knowledge I do not need a state permit for RI. If this is incorrect, please advise. Any help is greatly appreciated!

The good news. I am in RI and have a pair of Indigoes. A red face female and a peach face male. So no federal permit would be needed.
The bad news. They are about 30 inches and will be yearlings this August. I haven't even started a waiting list yet.

Thanks for the reply! How are you enjoying the animals? They require a longer time before breeding too, don't they? Keep me in mind for future clutches! Thanks!

My E.carinata are cool but the Indigoes are my favorites. They are still quite squirmy when held and spend most of their time in the hide but I think they will out grow that in time.

As for breeding, I'm planning on waiting until they are 4 years old before even attempting it. Winter of '06 sounds so far away.
