Kissing, Mating call, Playing?? What are my Res's doing!!?

turtlequest Apr 26, 2004 02:03 PM

Today i walked in on my two res's doing something i have never seen before. They were facing each other, nose to nose, kind of like they were rubbing their noses together. While doing this they were swimming around the tank in circles, kind of like a ballroom dance. What really stood out is that they both had their two front flippers pressed against the others front flipper and each flipper was vibrating, kind of like they were giving each other continously fast high fives with both hands. Reminded me of playing patty cake.

What are my res's doing? Here is a pic of them doing it, but you can't see the vibrating flippers. Sorry about the quality of the pic but i had to run and get the camera. The flash scared them away so this was the only pic i got.

It is called the "mating dance". Kind of a courtship ritual. They're just practicing, interesting to watch though.

Does that mean i have a male and female?

No. Males are more apt to do this fluttering but females will do it to and same sexes will do it to eachother.
